I have been using this lens extensively for the past 3 months, have taken it to our tour to Ladakh. I’m happy to mention that it came to call at flying colors…and satisfied my every requirement. I used a D5300 body alongside it. I will be able to list a few PRO/CON that I found alongside some shots.
The Good Things,
- The useful range for all-round photography, 17mm is ideal for landscapes/wide group shots. While 50 mm with f/2.8 will behave quite a sort of a 50mm prime and provides great bokeh for portraits.
- F/2.8 is fabulous for low light photography, I included an evening sky photo taken at wide-angle with a fully open aperture. The F/2.8 aperture allowed for lots of light to enter (so that you simply can keep ISO and shutter speed at an optimum level).
- Fast autofocus on my D5300. I took plenty of shots from inside moving vehicles, the shots came out sharp.
- The focus meter is sort of accurate and is beneficial for manually focussing at infinity for those night sky photos.
- Metal mount, far much better than those plastic mount in kit lenses.
- Sharp.. but as all enthusiasts are cognizant, it’s a touch soft wide open at f/2.8.. but when around f/4 to five .6… it’s really sharp. a touch softness and vignetting happen (not noticeable without 100% crop) at 17-30 mm, but then it’s sharp everywhere.
The bad things
- Heavier and chunkier than a kit lens, but that’s expected because it may be a constant aperture lens.
- No continuous Autofocus/manual focus button…so whenever you’ve got to modify to manual focus if you would like to fine-tune the main target manually a touch.
- There’s some clunky noise which may be felt, once you shake the lens, even with the OS off.
- The telephoto lens moves opposite to the normal NIKON lens, which could feel weird for brand spanking new users… and it’s not very fluid.
Overall verdict: It’s an honest lens, and an ideal fit travel lens (where you’ll not travel with many lenses). I wholeheartedly recommend this.

A quality lens in this category. It is very well built, feels solid, great grip with a rubberized ring.
It is large, but it feels right in my hand with a Sony 6300. Most important for me: it is extremely sharp, from center to corners.
This lens does not show chromatic aberrations on the pictures I took so far, still have to test at high contrast dark/bright motives.
The colors and contrast are very nice, not too pale, and not too intense. Similar to the neutral Rokinon contrast/colors of their 12mm f2.0.

This is a superb lens with specialized picture and video quality. I took a couple of pictures and asked a couple of my friends to guess the camera setup and no one imagined it to be a crop sensor.
The wide f1.8 aperture is awesome for bokeh and low-light performance. Also, the focal distance basically covers 3 prime lenses! The zoom and focus rings are sleek with the overall build quality of a boss.
This is often the closest you will get to full-frame on a crop sensor body. It’s crazy sharp!
The second is that the focus motor isn’t the quietest and is a tad slower than the Canon STM lenses. In fact, it’s so loud that I can hear it even with my on-camera Rode mic in autofocus. This is one very shiny toy. It took a short time on my behalf of me to post this review because initially, I used to be unsure if maybe it had an attention problem. After three weeks it’s clear that it’s operator error and learning curve.
On a pleasant bright day, you’ll indeed handhold this although it’s a touch of a beast. To demonstrate this, every picture I even have uploaded was taken hand-held. If you’re getting to use a tripod you’ll need a true one, not one among the small plastic bargain brands.
This lens works great but you’ve got to stay track of all the settings and remember which of them you’ve got set. for instance, there are two sorts of optical stabilization and you’ve got to recollect to shut it OFF when on a tripod or it’ll mess things up a touch.

Yes, it’s not fully weather-sealed just like the $2000 “sport” model and yes it’s made out of plastic (the “S” model is all metal I think). But it feels quite well made and solid, and there are many other things I might rather spend that extra $1000 on. the main target and therefore the zoom feels very smooth and straightforward to regulate.
They didn’t “nickel and dime” you on the extras. It comes with a pleasant padded case with a strap, a strap for the lens, and a lens hood.
Technically, in spite of what Sigma says I used to be ready to use my non-sigma (Tamron for Canon mounts) x1.4x teleconverter but no matter the lighting auto-focus went down the pipes once I did.

This lens is my workhorse lens. 98% of the time this lens never leaves my camera body. it’s absolutely the best for both extremely different photo settings that I shoot in.

I bought this lens off the rear of shopping for the 30mm DC DN one for my 6300. All I can say is it’s fabulous.
As sharp – if not sharper – than the 30mm and excellent in low light. 56mm on an APS-C sensor camera equates to 84mm on full-frame – so this is often an ideal camera lens.
Bokeh is creamy and therefore the image is so bright.
The only issue on behalf of me is that the 56mm isn’t automatically detected by Lightroom when processing the RAW files … there’s a Sigma 56mm DC DN profile available in LR but you’ve got to manually select it. Hopefully, this may get sorted in LR.
As mentioned above, no OSS so need a gimbal if you’re into a video … or keep your arms extra steady. it isn’t regrettable without OSS though.

I like to think about myself as an intermediate amateur. Figured I’d save and obtain this lens to use for macro photography AND as a camera lens. It works well for both, BUT you will need to require under consideration a couple of things that I learned while using this lens.
– this is often not that fun to use with kids who frolic. Not an excellent lens for casual use at the park, because you run into tons of AF-hunt. – The DOF on this lens at f/2.8 is RAZOR SHARP. you’ll lose focus and have undesirable results if you do not do something as simple as having your focus on an actual eyeball (as against aiming for the face and hoping). With the magnification, it’s pretty noticeable once you miss focus.
